From dream to reality... is it going to happen?

About us

We are three French students in food science. As you can imagine science is a passion for us but we do have other things in life ! Movies is one them. With this blog we wanted to combine our two interests in one. We will analyse some of the most famous science fiction movies and tell you if what's going on in these movies might happen in real life.

Yes, Jule Verne already proved it, fiction can become true thanks to science !

After ipad 25, iphone 12G.... welcome to i-robot, computer conspiration

Imagine yourself in a couple of years... you won't suffer from your back because of carrying heavy stuffs, you won't be tired because of cleaning your house all day long, you won't be spending your time doing household chores anymore... thanks to ROBOTS.

This topic so interested that I wanted to exchange my viewpoint with you about this amazing movie (directed by Alex Proyas) and the future with Robots.

If you want to listen to the plot synopsis of the I-Robot movie from 2004 click here

Will we have the same problem in a couple of years or will human beings be able to establish laws to keep privacy and let real life prevail as long as possible? People have to use, handle and control computers more and more everyday whatever their job is. It's a fact, computers are spreading in every single corner of the Earth.

Is it possible to be under the control of robots?! Maybe yes, if you consider that  sick people sometimes survives thanks to machines, that new borns suffering from serious diseases cannot survive without the help of incubators...

Why not tomorrow, a world where even eating, drinking or walking will be impossible without robots? Could it be offered to each of us?Japanese researchers have developped a robotic help that prevents you from tiring when you walk (Photo) called robot assistance.

To conclude, we must be careful about IT because between threat and hope the gap seems to be narrowing...

"Contagion"... a frightening futur

The movie "ContagContagion_Posterion"  deals with a deadly virus, called Meningoencephalitis Virus One (MEV-1), killing people in just a few days causing terrible pain. The epidemics spreads very quickly, the world medical community tries to find a cure and to control the panic which spreads even faster than the virus. The plot is available in this sound file: plot_of_contagion

The origin and symptoms of the virus are based on the Nipah virus. In humans, the Nipah virus causes fever, headache and drowsiness. Furthermore, infected patients may also have many other symptoms like cough, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, weakness, problems with swallowing and blurred vision. Finally, it will cause encephalitis.

Today, there is no definitive treatment for Nipah encephalatis...

The movie reminds us that human life is fragile and a lot of viruses could cause serious outbreaks. You may remember that in 2003, there  331 were deaths by H5N1 virus. Recently, Dutch scientists have mutated the H5N1 virus and created a hightly contagious virus.  Paul Keim, president of the agency of American biosafety (NSABB) said : "I know nothing more frightening than this virus".

A trip to the moon, the precursor

images Beyond all the modern movies, there is one movie : A trip to the moon, by George Méliès

This movie, based on Jule Verne's novel, deals with men who go to the Moon thanks to a space capsule launched from Earth using the latest improvements in physics and mechanics. You can listen to the entire plot here :plot__part1 plot__part2

It was in....1902 ! At this time it was totally science fiction, people barely had cars ! But, 67 years later the Appolo Program landed on the moon and Neil amstrong walked on its surface.

This is one of the best examples of science fiction movies which became true.

Here is an extract of a colored version of "A trip to the moon" ( colored with a brush !), the original was of course in black and white. Enjoy !

Le voyage dans la Lune, extrait

Now let's see how science discoveries of the XVIIth-XIXth century allowed Jule Verne to imagine such a story and allowed George Méliès to make this movie.

If Verne wrote his novel From the Earth to the Moon it's because the theory of launching an object in space had become possible, thanks to Newton's work about  the gravitation and celestial movement (yes the apple !) published in 1687. In addition it had become possible in technical terms since the middle of the XIXth century with the development of heavy artillery, metallurgy and propulsion techniques : Réaumur's work about steel in 1722, Bessemer's achievement in 1855 allowed the mass production of steel, the American Civil War led to very quick improvements in all field of artillery between the 1850s and the 1870s, first Reciprocating engine was created in 1859 by Lenoir.

All these discoveries struck the contemporaries and explain why Verne wrote his novel, and therefore why Méliès made his movie.
